The late 1980s and the early 1990s saw the rise of Japan in world football. After qualifying in their first AFC Asian Cup in 1988, Samurai Blue went on to win five regional championships, including the 2011 Asian Cup in Doha, Qatar, where they went unbeaten in six games on the way to the title.

Japan have cemented their place as one of the teams to beat in the largest continent in the world, but they are yet to taste success against the world’s best in the World Cup.
