In a group with Croatia, Serbia, Scotland, Wales and Macedonia, Marc Wilmots’ men looked unstoppable as they opened the qualifiers with a 2-0 victory over Wales and a 2-2 draw to Scotland. A month later, Belgium dispatched Serbia 3-0 and closed the year with a 2-0 win against Scotland.

The rest of the qualifiers looked easy for Belgium as they won their next five games comfortably, climbing as high as fifth in the FIFA rankings. They topped Group A and became seeded for the World Cup draw in Brazil, though their last match was a meek 1-1 draw against Wales.
